How to Work a Job Fair

 

Walking into a big job fair can be intimidating.  For some people it can be noisy and confusing with people everywhere and often not enough time to talk at length with the employers you want to meet.  But if you prepare for the event and know what to expect, you’ll find that amid all the noise and confusion, it can still be a worthwhile experience, streamlining your job hunt, giving you a chance to explore career opportunities and network with a variety of employers.  You can make it work for you.

Research Companies Attending Job Fair

Visit event coordinator website to obtain fair information
Visit company websites for current job openings

Review company history, mission, views, challenges, and future goals.
Prepare questions for company representatives

 

Bring Multiple Copies of Résumé

• General résumé for all employers
• Tailored résumé prepared for specific companies

 

Collect Handouts and Brochures

Collect as much written material to be reviewed at a later date.

 

Locations & Times

• Create a timeline for yourself including the events of the day

 

Visit All Booths

• Introduce yourself with a firm handshake and a smile
• Ask for business cards or write down the representative’s contact information
• Visit all non-profit organizations, education institutions, and employers

 

Follow-up

• Debrief yourself. Make notes
• Mail thank you cards, letters, and/or résumé and cover letter
